The alcohol breath analyzer is one tool that the authorities use to detect the blood alcohol (BAC) level, or amount of alcohol in a person's blood. It generally displays the percentage of ethyl in the blood. So a reading of 0.08 means 8% of ethyl alcohol in the blood. It takes a breath sample rather than a blood sample itself and is used by police officers to collect evidence on drunk driving. Numerous companies make and sell these devices to authorities. The manufacturer must comply with standards regulated by the government for these devices to be approved for collecting evidence. If in doubt about the device, write down the make, serial number, and model and check with the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to see if the device complies with the standard.
